We all want the magic report. The one that tells us exactly which penny created which pound. Software companies sell us this dream. They call it “data science.”
But in my experience at LeadDigital, attribution is far less science and far more art.
Data supports logic. It does not replace it.
Here is the reality of the modern buyer journey. A prospect sees your video on TikTok. They stop scrolling. They click. They browse your site but they do not buy. They get distracted. Life happens.
Three weeks later, they remember you. They go to Google. They search for your brand. They click a search ad. They buy.
The Mosaic Effect
If you look at the “science” of standard attribution, Google gets 100% of the credit. TikTok gets zero.
The logical, data-driven decision? Cut TikTok. Scale Google.
The result? Your sales crash.
You removed the first piece of the jigsaw puzzle because the last piece got all the glory. You cannot view marketing channels in isolation. They are ingredients in a recipe. They work in unison.
Billboards. Radio. Facebook. Google. They create a mosaic. If you remove the “unprofitable” tiles based on a spreadsheet alone, you ruin the picture. And you destroy your pipeline.
Real attribution requires experience. It requires judgement. It requires the art of understanding how humans actually behave.
The Goalkeeper Problem
Imagine running a football team. You look at the stats. You see that the striker scores all the goals. The goalkeeper scores zero. The defenders score zero.
So you fire the goalkeeper and the defenders. You use that budget to hire ten more strikers.
You will lose every single game.
This is exactly what businesses do with their marketing budget. They look at “Last Click” attribution. This model gives all the credit to the very last thing the customer clicked before buying.
Usually, that is a branded Google search or a retargeting ad.
These are the strikers. They put the ball in the net. But they cannot score if the midfielders (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) do not pass them the ball.
How To Fix Your Attribution
You stop looking for a single source of truth. It does not exist.
Instead, you look for lift.
You run the Facebook campaign. You do not just look at the sales inside the Facebook dashboard. You look at your total revenue. You look at your direct traffic. You look at your branded search volume on Google.
If you turn on Facebook ads and your Google search volume goes up, the ads are working.
If you turn off a radio campaign and your website traffic dips, the radio was working.
This is the “Art” component. It is the ability to zoom out. You must look at the ecosystem as a whole rather than obsessing over individual rows in a spreadsheet.
The Agency Advantage
Most business owners do not have the time to do this. They want to set it and forget it. They want the software to do the thinking.
But software lacks nuance. Software cannot feel the market.
We use data to inform our decisions. But we use experience to make them. We understand that a customer journey is messy. It is non-linear. It touches five different platforms before a wallet ever opens.
Do not destroy your pipeline by chasing perfect data. Build the mosaic. Trust your judgement. And watch the whole picture grow.
